That's my point, height is not a problem because Chinese basketball put a massive emphasis on height, thus forsaking skilled but shorter players like those on the Japanese team.

China in general is much better at developing athletes for individual sports rather than team sports - they’re not very good relative to their investment in soccer nor baseball too.
But they’re fine at tennis, ping pong, badminton, swimming, weight lifting etc. They’ve even got a runner every now and then. So seems at the grassroots level team coaching might be an issue? Just theorizing.
Oddly enough, volleyball seems to be an exception to this. They're ranked high in both mens and womens teams there and even medaled for womens.

Spot on, and you might notice that China basically sucks at all team sports that involve physical contacts. Kids in China play basketball for fun only, and schools don't really organize any tournaments. Selection of athletic prospects is mostly originated from less-developed areas where some families might send their kids off to the provincial training camps / "sports school", and how well you might progress down the road is mainly based on your physique (i.e. you will highly unlikely to become a PG in any provincial teams if you are only 5'5). So deep down in the root, basketball is only a job to them, and players in the CBA can earn 5x more in CBA than in other Asian leagues. With such a comfortable life, you won't really see Chinese players play with passion.
Volleyball is an exception, but only women's volleyball. It's odd that women's team seem to be achieving more success under the same regime.
猛龙球迷：楼上的兄弟你说到点子上了~~大家可能也注意到了，基本上所有需要身体对抗的团队运动中国都打得很烂…中国的孩子打篮球都是玩儿玩儿而已，学校之间也不太会举办锦标赛之类的…未来运动员的选材大部分是来自欠发达地区，那里的家长们把自己的孩子送到省训练队或者体育学校去训练，而他们的运动员之路如何走也主要取决于他们的体型（比如：如果你的身高只有165cm，那你几乎不可能在任何一个省篮球队打上控卫）。所以，归根结底，打篮球对中国运动员来说就是一份工作，而CBA的薪水又是其他亚洲篮球联赛薪水的5倍之多。在如此舒适没有压力的环境之下，很少有中国球员带着激情打球。排球确实是个例外，但仅限于女排~奇怪的是，虽然身处相同的体制之下，女队似乎比男队能取得更多的成功…

You make an interesting point about the CBA salaries being good.
In Japan, the same is the case as with baseball. It is a comfortable life to be an NPB player, but they still produce some incredible athletes that are MLB level all stars (or even the GOAT as we have right now with Ohtani). For a country as passionate about basketball as China, which isn't as limited by height, it still is a mystery the small amount of talent they produce.

You can say the same about my home country, Philippines. Its a basketball country but the team/coaching is booty cheeks. Id blame mostly the coaching though. Its like 90% Clarkson iso hero ball.
